Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I pump my tank?
Every 3 to 5 years for most households. Larger families, smaller tanks, garbage disposals, and high-occupancy rentals lean toward 3 years. If you don’t know when it was last pumped, treat it as due.
What are risers, and should I add them?
Risers are extensions that bring tank lids to or near ground level. Without them, every visit starts with digging. They are a modest one-time add at your next pump-out, and they make future pumping faster and cheaper — and inspections easier. For most homeowners, yes — worth it.
What records should I keep?
Every pumping receipt, inspection report, repair invoice, permit, and diagram. Store them with your home paperwork. Since HB 2671 took effect in July 2025, a documented history makes sales smoother.
Where do I find county paperwork for my system?
The Rockingham County Environmental Health office, through the Central Shenandoah Health District, holds permit and installation records and is involved in permitting. Harrisonburg city residents should confirm sewer versus septic — most in-city homes are on sewer, and most septic questions come from county communities. Sellers who can’t find documents should start with the health district; an inspection establishes current condition regardless.
Does Rockingham Septic Pros do the work?
Rockingham Septic Pros is an information and referral service owned by Branch and Vine Capital, LLC. We connect homeowners with independent, licensed local septic companies, and those companies perform all pumping, inspection, and repair work under their own licenses and insurance. Operators are DPOR/VDH licensed as applicable. We don’t employ technicians, and we don’t set the companies’ prices — quotes come from the company that will do your job.
How fast can someone come out?
It depends on the company and call volume. Emergencies — sewage backing up into the home — are triaged first. State your urgency honestly so the local company can prioritize.
